Carson shows support for Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere

25.04.17 Biosphere

Local MSP Finlay Carson has once again showed his support for the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere at a parliamentary reception yesterday evening.

At a meeting with many of his local constituents and residents, local MSP Finlay Carson had the opportunity to discuss the success of the biosphere with those directly involved and affected by it.

UNESCO’s Biospheres are learning sites for sustainable development where communities collaborate to live in harmony with their world-class living environment. Biospheres inspire communities to work together in creating a future we can all be proud of, connecting people with nature and cultural heritage, and strengthening local economies.

Commenting, Finlay Carson MSP said:

“I was delighted to have the opportunity to meet with constituents, including David and Alison Steele, from Gatehouse of Fleet, one of the first Biosphere Communities and Elizabeth Tindal, a Freelance Biosphere Dark Sky Ranger from Creetown,  to learn first-hand the success of the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere.

“UNESCO’s Biospheres are the world’s only globally recognised designation for demonstrating excellence in sustainable development. I know that many in my constituency of Galloway and West Dumfries are extremely proud of the Biosphere and there is no doubt that it has sought to enhance and recognise the fantastic communities it incorporates.

“I believe that the great success of the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere further strengthens the case for a Galloway National Park, which would enhance and complement the importance of sustainable development, nature, cultural development and the importance of strong communities in Galloway and West Dumfries.”

“ I also greatly welcome the announcement that the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere is to be the location for the first ever Dark Sky Park conference to be held in Europe on 20th to 22 Sept 2017 in Gatehouse of Fleet.”
