Scottish Government challenged to invest in South West Scotland

24.05.17 NP Debate

The Scottish Government has been challenged by local MSP Finlay Carson to recognise the importance of investment in south west Scotland.

During an exchange with Business Secretary Keith Brown at General Questions today, Carson made the case for a well-resourced, robust and autonomous South of Scotland Enterprise Agency, similar to that of Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

The challenge comes amidst concerns that the new agency will not have an autonomous board.

Carson also highlighted the commitment from the UK Government to bring forward a Borderlands Growth Deal that will include all councils on both sides of the border, to help secure prosperity in southern Scotland.

Commenting, Galloway and West Dumfries MSP, Finlay Carson said:

“I have long campaigned for a south of Scotland Enterprise Agency. This must be a well-resourced, robust and autonomous agency. Only with a fully autonomous board, like that of Highlands and Islands Enterprise, will my constituents of Galloway and West Dumfries fully benefit from the opportunities such an organisation would present.

“Unlike this SNP Government’s obsession with centralisation – the Scottish Conservatives will always make the case that decision making should be made as close to source as possible.

“The Conservatives have made a commitment to bring forward a Borderlands Growth Deal, including all councils on both sides of the border, to help secure prosperity in southern Scotland.”
