Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson has welcomed the announcement of a Year of Coasts and Waters which will take place in 2020.
The Scottish Government have announced that the latest Themed Year will focus on coastal communities across Scotland and Mr Carson is urging businesses and organisations to take advantage of the opportunities on offer.
The Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP highlighted the importance of coastal communities to the local economy, pointing out that Stranraer will be hosting the Skiffieworld Championships in July this year.
With funding available later this year through the YCW2020 Events Programme Open Fund, Mr Carson has also written to Dumfries and Galloway Council and the South of Scotland Economic Partnership to ask how they can support coastal communities as part of the themed year.
Commenting Finlay Carson MSP said: “I warmly welcome the news that 2020 will centre on promoting our coastal communities which are so valuable to the economy across my Galloway constituency.
“This can help deliver real boosts for businesses and organisations and I would urge them to get involved through the funding process.
“In particular, we have heard for far too long about how Stranraer’s waterfront is going to be redeveloped without any action taking place.
“What better way to look ahead to the Themed Year celebrating our coastal communities than to see the regeneration of Stranraer’s waterfront and marina.
“I hope that the council and the South of Scotland economic partnership can also give their support to help ensure that businesses and organisations maximise the benefits of this year focused on coastal communities.”
