Carson encourages application to Coasts and Waters Fund

Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson is encouraging local groups and communities to apply for a funding to ensure they benefit from the Year of Coasts and Waters.

The Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP says the £150,000 total fund from Scottish Natural Heritage can enable groups, including schools and youth groups as well as organisations with an interest in the natural environment to leave a lasting legacy.

Grants of up to £10,000 are available, with grants of £500 being made to schools and youth groups who wish to visit local nature reserves.

Mr Carson says it is a perfect opportunity for exciting projects in relation to the incredible landscape around Galloway’s coast to come to fruition.

Commenting, Finlay Carson MSP said: “This is a hugely welcome fund from Scottish Natural Heritage and I am pleased to see they are committed to the Year of Coasts and Waters.

“In my constituency, we have such stunning seas and natural environment, which was showcased to the world last year with the World Skiffie Championships in Stranraer, and this is a real opportunity to build on that.

“There are many terrific organisations doing great work in relation to our environment and habitat so I would encourage them to apply for funding to drive these projects forward.

“It is also welcome to see grants set aside that will help future generations connect with nature, which is vitally important.

“The Year of Coasts and Waters has huge potential across the region and I hope to see many local applications to this fund.”
