Carson pushes for flood protection scheme in Newton Stewart

Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson has once again asked the Scottish Government to do all it can to ensure that the long-awaited flood protection scheme in Newton Stewart can be delivered as a matter of urgency

The Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP urged the Cabinet Secretary Roseanna Cunningham to play her role in delivering the scheme now over four years since flooding devastated the town and over three years after First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced funding would be made available to help protect Newton Stewart.

Mr Carson had pressed Environment Climate Change and Land Reform Secretary on the issue in November but she failed to give an assurance that the First Minister’s commitment of 2016 would be met.

During portfolio questions he asked what discussions she had had with Dumfries and Galloway Council.

Roseanna Cunningham said she would be happy to look into the matter, but ultimate responsibility still lay with the council to bring forward flood protection proposals.

Commenting, Finlay Carson MSP said: “Dumfries and Galloway Council must come forward with their proposals, and the SNP Government must support them going forward and ensure there is no further delay in progressing the scheme.

“The resilience of the community in Newton Stewart since the flooding at the end of 2015 has been nothing short of outstanding and has helped the community get back on it’s feet.

“However, four years on they are still frustrated by having to wait for the long-awaited flood protection scheme and the continued delays cannot go on any longer.

Adding his calls for the scheme to be delivered, Conservative Councillor for Mid Galloway and Wigtown West David Inglis said:

“We have been waiting for the publication of the flood order since last summer, with local updates from council officials few and far between.

“It is hugely disappointing that the residents of Newton Stewart are still waiting for this scheme to be delivered after waiting for so many years.”
