Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson has welcomed a U-turn on regulations which had seen the deadlines for Freedom of Information Requests extended from 20 days to 60 days.

However, the Scottish Parliament’s Covid-19 committee has now forced a change to the legislation forcing the SNP Government to agree that the usual 20 days must be adhered to when responding to FOI requests.

Mr Carson says the move is welcome in ensuring transparency remains key for the public during the Covid-19 pandemic in terms of decisions being taken by the SNP Government and other authorities.

Commenting Finlay Carson MSP said: “The move to extend Freedom of Information Requests to 60 days as part of initial emergency coronavirus legislation was misguided and sent out completely the wrong message.

“It is welcome now that the SNP Government have agreed to revert back to the usual 20 day deadline to respond to requests.

“Transparency is absolutely key at all times, but particularly at the moment in relation to decisions about the Covid-19 pandemic from public authorities.

“This will ensure confidence from the public in decision makers if requests can be responded to within an acceptable timescale.”
