Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson has welcomed billions of support being provided by the UK Government to support Scotland through the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP highlighted figures from the SNP Government which show that more than £3.5 billion worth of support has arrived from the UK Government in terms of Barnett Consequentials.
Mr Carson says this has gone a long way to protect the local economy and also help support NHS Dumfries and Galloway and other care services from being overwhelmed at this time.
The £4 billion being spent in Scotland outlined by the SNP Government does not include the support given by the furlough scheme.
Mr Carson also highlighted how the furlough job scheme has helped to save over 370,000 jobs in Scotland, which sees the UK Government paying 80 per cent of people’s wages each month.
Commenting Finlay Carson MSP said: “People living in my constituency are fully aware of how vital it is to have worked together as one United Kingdom through the Covid-19 pandemic.
“These figures now highlight the extraordinary support that has been provided by the UK Government as a result of Barnett Consequentials.
“That has helped to support the economy and also help the local health board and other care services not be overwhelmed from the pandemic.
“This shows how committed the UK Government are to protecting communities across Scotland which is particularly important in a constituency like mine close to the border.
“Hopefully once the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic is over, we will emerge stronger as one United Kingdom working together.”
