Carson calls for backing for water sports projects to regenerate Stranraer

Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson has called on people in Stranraer and the surrounding area to help take forward plans to regenerate the region.

The Scottish Conservative and Unionist MSP is hoping people will fill in a current questionnaire being carried out by the Stranraer Water Sports Association in order to build on the success of the World Skiffie Championships held in the town last year.

Mr Carson believes that Loch Ryan and the Marina can help to regenerate the town and brand the area as a top destination for water sports in the coming years, attracting tourists and competitors from around the world, and the Watersports Association have a major role to play in introducing new sporting activities to youngsters and help to bring jobs and investment to the local economy.

Although he understands the current restrictions in place due to Covid-19, he still hopes the online questionnaire will be completed as many people as possible in order to support the plans.

Commenting Finlay Carson MSP said: “It is really pleasing to see that the Stranraer Water Sports Association are continuing to push ahead with their plans, even in light of the current Covid-19 restrictions.

“I hope that as many people as possible can fill in the questionnaire in order to support their plans to help regenerate Loch Ryan and the wider marina area in Stranraer.

“The World Skiffie Championships on Loch Ryan last year were an absolutely tremendous success and gave the local area a huge boost and put Stranraer on the map in places across the world.

“There is no doubt that this part of our region can be a great destination for water sports activities going forward in order to build on the success of the Skiffie Championships and help generate new projects and competitions on Loch Ryan.

“Hopefully the questionnaire will show overwhelming backing for the plans for the Water Sports Association who are working tirelessly and adapting to the current circumstances in order to promote the region.”20161206 EP 045325A GVW 0098 1
