Galloway and West Dumfries MSP Finlay Carson has welcomed long overdue progress on cleaning up Garlieston Harbour.
After contacting the council for an update back in April, to see how contracting work was progressing, Mr Carson was assured that works would be undertaken during the spring and summer.
However, he was contacted by the community council earlier this month, who were angry that no works had progressed ahead of the busy tourist season in the village, with the harbour continuing to be an eyesore.
A further update from the council today though has confirmed that the contractor was being contacted to outline the specification of works which has now been guaranteed, with works due to start very soon.
Commenting Finlay Carson MSP said: “It is pleasing that works are finally set to begin at Garlieston Harbour, which are long overdue.
“The harbour is absolutely vital for the local economy, particularly at the height of the summer season and I had hoped that work would have begun before now.
“The villagers in Garlieston take a lot of pride in their local area, so it has been disappointing to continually see the harbour left in a mess.
“I hope now that the specifications for work have been agreed, that the works can start as a matter of urgency, as we go into the height of summer.”
