Today, I gave a speech in the Citizen Participation and Public Petitions Committee on the urgent improvements that are needed for the A75. The route suffers from chronic under investment with an appalling track record of road accidents. From January to September alone this year, the A75 have been closed on 9 occasions due to serious road traffic accidents, and during the same time period the road was closed on eleven occasions due to road works or storm damages.
Moreover, the Sir Peter Hendy Union Connectivity Review recognised the route as one of the most financially beneficial roads in the UK, carrying billions of pounds worth of goods every year. As a key artery between the UK and Europe, upgrades to the A75 are long overdue. Eight years after the petition was first lodged, improvements now need to be made with a much greater sense of urgency.
The committee agreed that this is far too long to wait and to keep the petition open to try and pursue these concerns.
