Local constituency MSP Finlay Carson is seeking clarity over Lactalis' decision to terminate the contracts of a number of South West milk producers.
The Galloway and West Dumfries MSP spoke of his disappointment following the announcement by the dairy processor to serve notice on 12 dairies.
The producers – 10 in Dumfries and Galloway and two in Ayrshire – have been given 12 months notice.
Speaking hours after the announcement, Mr Carson said: “It is never good news to hear of producers being served notice on their contracts and it must be a difficult time for those involved. I will be discussing the issue with MSA.
“Everybody knows the remarkable quality of the milk supplied through the Milk Suppliers Association (MSA), a co-operative of dairy farmers based throughout the South West Scotland. Supplying around 210 million litres of milk per annum to Lactalis they have the knowledge and expertise to assist those involved.
According to Lactalis, the decision has been taken following a business review of its milk supply in South West Scotland
